Times have changed. For the first time in history, our business plans for the coming year should include a section dedicated to AI.
Why my 2027 business plan is different
Over the last two decades, I've done everything from running luxury hotels to business coaching and consulting, and for the last two years I've been running my marketing agency and AI transformation company. I've been writing and working from business plans for a long time. Every plan I've ever written centered on what we humans would do to grow the company.
My 2027 plan is different. It has a separate section on how I use AI in my company. It also names who my AI team members are and what they'll do throughout the year to support the company and their human colleagues. Think of a chief of staff, a sales rep and a marketing manager that never clock out.
Most businesses are still learning AI
This year has been the most eye-opening of my career when it comes to where technology is, where it's going and what it means for business leaders like us. AI is my everyday reality, so I was surprised by a recent American Express study (Amex Trendex: Small Business Edition, Nov 2025): 88% of small businesses say they're still learning how to use AI effectively.
From what I see, most business owners use AI as a helpful little tool to read and write. They forget it can automate a big part of the operation.
What your AI section should include
If you're wondering where to start, build your AI section around three parts:
- 01Where you are today. Which AI tools are you using now, and for what?
- 02Where AI will take on the work. Which repetitive tasks will you hand to AI this year, in sales, marketing, operations or admin?
- 03Who's on your AI team. What roles will AI fill, who on your human team will they support, and how will you measure the results?
Be the leader others follow
If you own a business, start your 2027 business plan now, and save a section for AI. The companies that adapt and put this technology to work will be the ones pulling away from their competitors. Be the leader, be first and be the one others follow.
